Lava Lamp Experiment

I remember longing for a lava lamp as a teenager. Alongside the inflatable chair and Tom Cruise they were the height of cool.

Imagine my delight when I stumbled across this very simple experiment. It mimics the mesmerising floating bubbles of a lava lamp, requires no special equipment, just a few regular household ingredients.

To create your own lava lamp you will need

An Empty Bottle

A Little Water

Some Sunflower Oil

A Few Drops of Food Colouring

An Alka Seltzer Tablet (crumbled into 5 or 6 small pieces)

Fill your bottle approximately a quarter full with water.

Fill the rest of the bottle with the oil and wait for the liquids to separate.

Add a few drops of food colouring.

Drop in a little portion of the Alka Seltzer tablet and watch the coloured bubbles rise to the surface as the carbon dioxide is released from the tablet.

Keep added bits of the tablet to keep your lava lamp bubbling.

As this experiment includes an alka seltzer tablet, adult supervision is required.
